I was tempted to translate "Mastool" as "drunk" or "high" but actually it kind of just means "intoxicated" or "under the influence" whether you are drunk or stoned or both. And there is another word that means drunk "sakraan." In the song anyway the point is he is not under the influence of anything and that he is in his right mind.

I guess the scenario of this song is that Hamada is singing at the wedding of a girl who he was already engaged to and then ditched him. To get a better feeling of what's going on you should watch the video.

By my calculations this is the site's 600th translation. Oum Kalthoum's "El Atlal (The Ruins)" is a real classic and is considered a high point of Arabic music. The only song ever written by the legendary Ibrahim Nagi, it is one of the most complicated and esoteric works of modern Arabic music and poetry. This is the only English translation I have ever seen of the song, so if you want to post it somewhere please cite my website with a link.

In order to achieve a successful translation I have enlisted the help of the French translation below by Samir Megally and my roommate Albane to help me interpret that. If you want to see the whole performance you can find it in partitions on Youtube cuz it is really long.

The phrase "kull 3aam wanta bi-kheir (every year and you are well)" is a common salutation on annual occassions such as Ramadan or birthdays or New Year's. There are using variations on this phrase quite a bit in the first verse, so I've translated it literally even though it does not make good sense in English just know it's referring to a common idomatic phrase in Arabic.

This is a really beautiful song by Natacha Atlas. It's featured in the equally awesome Korean film 3-iron. There's no video for this song so I used one of the clips from the movie that includes it. Nothing like seeing a guy getting hit in the balls with golfballs outside of the context of funniest home videos. This translation is flat out wrong, I can't be 100% sure that I understand the meaning of the song and I think the Arabic lyrics have mistakes. Alright in Arabic this song makes more sense to me than when it comes to English, but I will give an explanation. So a couple of these lines don't really make sense in English because they are idiomatic and I don't know how to translate them best. For instance you'll see the album is listed online with all titles translated except this one! In the first part she makes the command "ruuq" which means to become clear or serene. "Joww" means the atmosphere, the mood, or the weather, just generally the prevailing environment. These two words are usually interrelated so just know they fit together. The guy is holding something in, and Maya can tell that he is not showing his true mood. So she is just telling him to get ahold of himself and act natural cuz suppressing it is just making it worse. In a nutshell what she is really saying is "just tell me what's eating you"
