Fairuz - The Shalabi Girl
فيروز - البنت الشلبية
Al Bint Al Shalabiya
I'm confused as to whether شلبي is a word with any meaning or it is just a place name. Can someone help me out?
| Fairouz - The Shalabi Girl The Shalabi girl She has almond eyes I love you from the bottom of my heart Oh sweetheart, you are everything to me (literally, you are my eyes) | ![]() |
Under the arches
My love is waiting
It wasn't easy for me to let you down, my love
You appear in the distance and my heart is wounded
And I reminisce about days past
Under the pomegranate tree
My love spoke to me
Sang me songs and flirted with me
فيروز - البنت الشلبية
البنت الشلبية
عيونها لوزية
بحبك من قلبي
ياقلبي انت عنيا
حد القناطر
محبوبي ناطر
كسر الخواطر
ياولفي ماهان عليا
بتطل بتلوح و القلب مجروح
و أيام عالبال بتعن و تروح
تحت الرمانة
حبي حكاني
وسمعني غناني
ياعيوني
وتغزل فيا

Shalab is Silves, Portugal.
Of course, this is not really Fairuz's song, but an old Andalusian one (also known by it's other name/lyrics "Il 3azoubiya"), so the Shalabi reference makes perfect sense.
shalabi is beautiful
can you give an example of shalabi meaning beautiful, or tell what dialect it is from?
I don't think it's an old Andalusian song, since the lyrics are in Lebanese dialect
yes it does not sound like sounds that are typically attributed to anadlusian classical typically, so what does shalabi mean?
Shalabi in Lebanon or Syria etc.... Means 'down to earth'.
So the 'down to earth' girl.
There isnt a word for this in english.
Hey all, thanks for your comments. I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but شلبي is most certainly from the Turkish çelebi, which has the connotations of "refined" or "well-bred." In Arabic likewise as some posters have indicated, it has such connotations as well-mannered, good, fine, nice, pretty, or maybe if I had to translate it into English the best intended one-word meaning, at least in this context attributed to a girl, would be "sweet." However, I am not going to change the translation because I don't want to be the last word on this discussion and encourage others to chime in.
